Occasionally, when the conditions are right, a being is produced within a certain species that transcends it's most average individual in a significant manner. An Alpha is a being that is inherently superior to its kin in some fashion be it physical condition, magical potential, or intelligence (maybe all three). Such a mutation is rare though not unheard of. Gods have actually set about finding the alphas, seeing them as a stepping stone into creating new Gods in most cases or terrible threats to be contained in others.

There are three different types of Alphas: Natural, Induced, and Artificial.

Natural Alpha are just born. They are inherently superior because of their genetics or potential. The speed and time at which they develop and master their abilities are totally random, while also being dependent on emotional state and environment. While the powers will manifest to some degree overtime as a defining yet inconspicuous trait in a dormant Natural, for the development to happen there must be a brief, intense period of psychological stress in the subject's life that triggers the proper chemical responses in the body, thus allowing their genetics to take hold.

Induced Alpha are essentially halfway between Natural Alpha and Artificial Alpha. They posses some of the altered genetics necessary for the change, yet lack enough to complete it. However their biology is tampered with at a point after conception that forever alters their genetics and body chemistry, thus rendering them able to become Alphas. This is achieved through either magic or experimentation. The factor that separates an Induced Alpha from a Natural Alpha is unnatural interference-- somebody else with the means and knowledge intervened and made something new.

Artificial Alpha are usually created with, by, or from advanced technology. Usually it refers to biological beings with no genetic traces of Alpha markers who have undergone some type of change via technology, essentially forcing them to evolve in an unnatural manner. Usually, Artificial Alpha have actual technology in their bodies to facilitate the use of their powers and cell stability, as they lack the proper genetics to use these powers. This can also be achieved through certain drugs and medications, and while technology is usually involved can also be linked to other factors if none are present. The defining trait of the Artificial Alpha is that they had no potential from the the start to become what they currently are.
